  • The American Cancer Society celebrated with cancer survivors and their caregivers Sunday afternoon with an ice cream social.
Those attending enjoyed Freddy’s Frozen Custard, with a variety of toppings, as they talked with others.
In addition, Kellyn Modlin, community manager-development for Relay For Life and Daffodil Days with the ACS, talked about some of the services the ACS offers.
She began by talking about how she got involved with the Relay For Life and American Cancer Society because her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer three times, dying from the third return of the disease.
Modlin too had three surgeries for issues with her skin but none were cancer.
“Preventive care does work for cancers that you can do that for,” she said.
She hopes one day research will provide preventive care for more types of cancer.
For those who do have cancer and their family and caregivers, there are a number of resources available through the American Cancer Society, as well as additional resources through the Cancer Center at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Some of the services include an 800 number, 1-800-ACS-2345, which offers cancer information 24 hours a day seven days a week, as well as information available at www.cancer.org.
They also offer a cancer profiler which helps patients manage day-to-day details of treatment; a Cancer Survivors Network, which gives those with cancer and their families an opportunity to communicate with others who have experienced cancer; Hope Lodge, which offers free lodging for adults undergoing cancer treatments; Look Good...Feel Better, which teaches beauty techniques to female cancer patients and helps them cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment; www.2bMe.org, which is for teens; www.lookgoodfeelbetterformen.org; patient navigation services, which assists in finding support, transportation, financial assistance and other services; Reach to Recovery, information and support for those facing breast cancer through visits with society volunteers; and camps, scholarships and more.
“All we’re trying to do is help people get well, feel well and stay well,” Modlin said.
