To quote another great American Patriot, Patrick Henry gave a speech before the provisional Congress on March 23, 1775 where he stated, in part, “…..I know of no way of judging the future but by the past…….Is life so dear, or peace so sweet as to be purchased by the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me Liberty or give me Death!”
We, as a nation, are currently facing a decision that will affect not only us but most assuredly our generations to follow. In a few short days, those of us who take our responsibility as American Citizen’s seriously and vote must decide what kind of life, nay, what kind of posterity we will leave to American’s not yet born. Generations of Americans have decided and are still in the field deciding, to sacrifice themselves to assure their posterity will not have to make that same decision and in the process paid for their sacrifices with their very lives.
Over the past several decades, there has been at first a gradual, then progressively more rapid slide to dependency, call it slavery if you wish. A dependency upon the State to provide for ME more and more of those things for which we are responsible in providing for ourselves, our families, and our communities. Never in my sixty years have I seen such a division of purpose and diametrically opposed course for our nation; on one side are those who believe they have been born into a society in which they deserve, and government is expected to provide, all the necessities of life and comfort without any input of effort of their own.
On the other hand are those who believe in the Liberty of making their own decisions and the belief in an individuals’ responsibility to strive and sacrifice, to fail and to succeed based upon their own efforts. Liberty is not license to forcefully take from others’, by rule of the mob, the benefits of our own labors and redistribute those benefits to others who have the ability to provide for themselves.
As we look throughout the long history of the relationship of government and man, we can easily see the courses once great nations have taken; from Rule of Law, all men being equal in the eyes of God and man as our current Constitutional Republic was established, or to be ruled by the Mobacracy of Democracy where each person votes based not upon the best interests of the Nation and our posterity but based upon “what benefits me the most right now.” “I want my free stuff now!” Government was ordained of God to protect citizens from evil by providing an environment of safety and security allowing us to go about our daily lives providing for family and community without undue fear of those who would take from us, by criminal intent or Governmental decree, the fruits of our own efforts and labor.
Currently, our government, to include local, state, and federal, is on the fast track to nationalizing all aspects of society in the name of ‘fairness’ to allow them the power to redistribute those properties earned by one to give to another. To the extent they are successful, they can be assured of reelection as the numbers of those getting “free stuff” increases.
“Leveling the playing field” is certainly a laudable endeavor, but at some point those who produce finally realize that despite their increasing efforts, at the end of the day there is not enough left over for them to achieve their dreams. The Constitutional Republican form of American Government is the greatest and most successful form of government ever experienced; where once the ‘right of Kings’ superceded all other rights including those of the individual, we now have a Constitutional Republic wherein all rights are ceded to the individual as long as those rights do not interfere with the rights of others.
We are rapidly coming full circle in that should we continue the current course of direction, the Right of Kings will once again be the law of the land. The King, that is, the Government, and its’ myriad laws and regulations, will abrogate all rights of the individual taking unto itself all the wealth of America’s productive capability in exchange for cradle to grave control over every minute aspect of our daily lives.
Those who have come to this incredible and awesome Nation have done so in the belief and desire for a better life, a life where one does not answer to the authorities that be but has a chance of making things better for their offspring and future generations. A nation whose government forcefully takes from one group and redistributes to another cannot long survive.
At some point, the producers can no longer provide enough to be redistributed. Yes, America is indeed at a decision point; will it be Liberty? Or death, by a thousand cuts? We owe it to those who have given their all in previous generations, and to those generations yet unborn to be diligent in our duties.
I would encourage each and every citizen of the Greatest Nation on earth to take their responsibility seriously, and with much thought and prayer to vote on Nov. 6 as their conscience dictates. History is in our hands; what kind of nation and government will we leave to our grandchildren, and their grandchildren? A nation of perpetual Liberty and Freedom? Or that of chains and slavery?
