  • "Candy Cane Murder" by Joanne Fluke

Here are a few fun facts about candy canes from the National Confectioners Association:

-White was the only color of candy canes for 200 years

-December 26 is National Candy Cane Day in the United States

-Paul Ghinelli created the world’s largest candy cane, measuring 58 feet, 2 ¼ inches

-1.76 billon candy canes are made each year – enough to stretch from Santa Claus, Indiana, to North Pole, Alaska, and back again 32 times

And here’s a sobering fact from the American Library Association:

-Americans spend nearly three times as much on candy as on public libraries

A couple of New Year’s resolutions:

    -Increase support of public libraries

-Cut calories (Healthy Harvey Coalition will be screening “The Weight of the Nation: Confronting America’s Obesity Epidemic,” 7-9:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 and 30 at the Newton High School Auditorium, 900 W. 12 St.)
