  • USM women’s basketball to host free clinic for children of active-duty military
  • The University of Saint Mary women’s basketball team is hosting a free hoops clinic for the children of active-duty military service members.
On Jan. 19, the event will be held from 9-11 a.m. at the Harney Sports Complex at Fort Leavenworth.
The clinic is for children ages 8-15. Available slots are limited. Send your child’s name and age to jason.t.fullen.naf@mail.mil to RSVP. For more information, all 913-684-7526.
Attendees will learn key lessons in basketball fundamentals from Spires coaching staff and USM players.
Students participating in the clinic will also receive a free ticket to the team’s home game versus Bethel College at 5 p.m. that night.
“We wanted to do something for the military families that sacrifice so much for us,” Saint Mary coach Mike Basler said. “Through my time in the community, I know there are a lot of military families that don’t always get to do things in the community because they move so often. We thought it would be great to go up there for a day and just give back.
“It’s great for our players, too. When you’re a college athlete you need to realize you’re fortunate, and you need to give back and try to be somebody’s hero.”
Clinic participants should wear a T-shirt, shorts and basketball shoes, and bring a water bottle to the event.
