Voters to decide if to continue one-cent sales tax

Residents will have the opportunity to vote on continuing the one-cent sales tax in the city of El Dorado during the April election.

The Sales Tax Task Force unanimously recommended asking voters to continue the one-cent sales tax for another five years.

They also approved maintaining the current distribution of those funds, including the first $600,000 for streets, $1,350,000 for property tax relief and $50,000 for economic development and job creation. Any excess funds would be available for additional property tax relief up to $350,000 and additional capital improvement projects.

The City Commission approved the ordinance pledging the use of the money and a resolution to put the question on the ballot during their meeting Monday.

In other business, the commission:

• appointed Steve Funk to the Sales Tax Committee.

• approved the final plat of the Westwood Third Addition. This cleaned up the property lines on two lots. The landowner intends to build a house on one lot, then build a house on lot two and sell it.

• issued a proclamation for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Butler County recognizing January as RSVP month.

“We have a great volunteer base in Butler County and El Dorado, and it’s nice to honor them this evening,” said Mayor Tom McKibban.
