Those looking for a fun way to spend their time next weekend will have a great tasty and musical option when Trinity United Methodist Church presents its annual Ice Cream Social and Broadway Concert at 3 p.m. on Aug. 24.
The Chancel Choir at the church has been holding an annual choir fest for about 10 years now, with the ice cream social accompanying it throughout. Michele Banks said the event provides a unique opportunity for the choirists to sing their favorite anthems.
“This helps get our choir year started off in a fun way,” she said.
Church members will provide the homemade ice cream, though cake and other treats are often brought as well.
“It’ll be a treat, both musically and to the palette,” Banks said. “It’s just a lot of fun for both audience and musician.”
This will be the second year for the Broadway theme of the concert. The theme grew out of interest last year to present loved secular songs to the audience. The reception to the change in format was enthusiastic and strong, leading them to the decision to do it again.
The concert, for which planning has been taking place over the summer, will feature selections from a variety of popular Broadway shows, including Oklahoma, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and West Side Story among others.
Banks said the event also presents a great chance for the choir to highlight the talent of its soloists. The Trinity Bell Choir will also be featured.
An optional free-will donation will be accepted during the event to go toward purchasing the church’s own lighting system, which will be utilized for more upcoming entertainment when the church holds Trinity’s Christmas Dinner Theater the first full weekend in December.
Banks said the church is easily accessible for those with physical disabilities and encourages all to attend.
“It’s a fast-moving concert and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” she said.
