Heather Temple, of El Dorado, officially became Miss Rodeo Kansas Saturday evening during a coronation ceremony at the Civic Center.

Temple competed for the title of Miss Kansas Rodeo during a four-day event at the Dodge City Round-Up Rodeo last August.

The competition included two rounds of modeling, two rounds of horsemanship, three interviews, and current event and rodeo knowledge questions, as well as giving a speech.

"It meant a lot," Temple said of receiving the crown. "I've been working up toward it for 12 years."

She said it was surreal now having the crown on her hat.

The event Saturday evening included a dinner, silent and live auction, and Mr. Rodeo Kansas competition.

Temple had earned eight titles before this, including OPHA (Oklahoma Pinto Horse Association) Sweetheart in 2002, Miss American Princess state finalist, Junction City Rodeo Queen, Miss Beef Empire Days Rodeo Queen 2008, Miss Teen Rodeo Kansas 2006, Miss CPRA (Central Prairie Rodeo) 2011, JCRA Queen 2007-2008 and CPRA Princess 2005.

She decided to compete for Miss Rodeo Kansas after meeting the 2000 Miss Rodeo Kansas, Amanda (Erwin) Guthrie, in Las Vegas.

"I've met the most amazing and supportive people and friends," she said of her time in the competitions.

Temple now has a busy year ahead of her, including rodeos, school visits, parades, troop feeds with American Beef Battalion and more. Then at the end of this year she will be competing for Miss Rodeo America in late September or early October in conjunction with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada. This competition includes appearance, horsemanship and personality.

Temple also has competed in horse shows and rodeos for many years.

She is the 2004 World Wide Paint Horse Congress Youth Equitation Champion and 2007 World Wide Paint Horse Congress Youth Goat tying Champion.

She was a member of the Kansas High School Rodeo Association competing in breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing.

She served the vice president of the Kansas Junior Rodeo Association and was national youth director for the American Junior Paint Horse Association.

Temple is the daughter of Randy and Trudi Temple and granddaughter of Ilo Joachim, all of El Dorado, and Ethan Temple of Independence.
