A 14-year-old girl was critically injured in a golf cart accident Wednesday at Fox Lake.

At around 6:15 p.m., the Butler County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Fox Lake (east of Cassoday) to the report of a recreational vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, deputies found that Regan G. Wheeler of Wichita, had been driving a golf cart and trying to make a turn on an embankment above a creek. For unknown reasons at this time Wheeler lost control of the golf cart and became entangled in a barbed wire fence while teetering on the embankment over the creek.
She was entangled in the wire for 20 to 30 minutes before an adult resident at Fox Lake was contacted and able to cut her out of the fence. Two other juvenile females were passengers in the golf cart and had desperately tried to free the driver to no avail.

With the golf cart teetering above the creek, the adult male responder was able to stabilize the cart by using an extension cord tied to his pickup to keep the cart from falling into the creek, according to the report.

Upon arrival of deputies, rescue personnel and medical responders, Wheeler was unresponsive. She was
airlifted by helicopter in very critical condition to Wesley Hospital in Wichita.

The other two occupants of the golf cart did not suffer physical injury and are not being identified by the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Officers believe the girls involved, all from Wichita, are on Spring Break and were visiting friends at Fox Lake, according to Sheriff Craig Murphy.

Murphy said Fox Lake is generally known as a summertime retreat for a number of citizens and consists of citizens owning cabins on the small lake. Some of those citizens are from the Wichita area. There are residents who live year round at the lake. Fox Lake is private property.
