El Dorado, Kan. -

The El Dorado City Commission viewed a drawing of the future dog park during a workshop last week.

The city currently has $6,800 to go toward the construction of the facility, including $5,000 from the city and $1,800 in donations. They also have applied for a grant.

“We will incorporate it in phase three of the bike path, which runs into East Park and will incorporate a parking lot,” said John Scanlon, director of parks and recreation.
The park would go back 600 feet to the railroad tracks, although they don’t have plans to fence in the entire area.

The fencing for the park will cost about $4,600.

Additional funding is being raised for a dog drinking fountain. So far, $1,600 has been raised for that feature, which would cost $2,700.

The park will include a 10-by-6 foot area to unleash a dog, then they can go into the park.

There also will be rules posted, requiring shots and licenses of all animals, and clean up of the park will be done by those who use it.

The parking lot also will not be included in the initial plan, rather allowing parking on the street.

“We wanted to anticipate the day we would need a parking lot,” said Herb Llewellyn, city manager.

The city crews are ready to begin putting the fence up and it should take about one month to complete. With the city’s approval they were ready to order the fence and begin putting it up in the next week or two.

They also still need to determine from where funding will come for the sidewalks.
