Since Jennifer Jones was crowned Miss Butler County 2008 in October, she’s tallied up, the KU student has appeared before about 4 million people.
El Dorado Middle School sixth graders got the chance to join that group when Jones spoke to them Thursday morning about the importance of being a friend. She’s delivered her message to more than 30 elementary and high schools so far and EMS was the third time she’s spoken to a middle school crowd.

USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks presented a ceremonial check totaling $1,525,000 in USDA Community Facilities Direct and Guaranteed Loan Program funding to Flinthills Services, Inc. Thursday to assist in constructing a new day center for citizens with developmental disabilities, a vehicle/maintenance facility, and renovating an existing building for an administrative facility.

Two Bruno Township leaders are under investigation after Butler County officials learned nearly $18,000 in taxpayer money had been embezzled by the townships’ treasurer, Lisa Quade, between March and December 2007.
Specifically, Quade used her Bruno Township debit card to make ATM withdrawals and personal purchases. As recently as February and March 2008, she also wrote checks to herself in the amount of $1,300 and received cash back from township deposits made to National Bank of Andover.

Three projects will be funded this year out of excess sales tax dollars.
The El Dorado City Commission gave its approval of the recommendation by the Sales Tax Advisory Committee for the uncommitted money at their meeting Monday night.
The recommendation was the conclusion of an ongoing process.

Construction is underway on the new location for the World War II History Center.
The museum board took over their new location, at 119 W. Central, on Feb. 1, providing a storefront and more permanent location for the museum.

It was a good day for a bicycle ride as the participants in the Great Escape Bike Ride headed out Sunday morning.
This year’s event was much different than last year’s, which ended up being rained out.
“We had 50 pre-register and we’re expecting about 100,” said Jack Cauble, organizer. “If you hit a good day, you’re going to do fine.”

The Butler County History Center is taking a look back at 1958. The exhibit, “Two Minutes of Terror,” opens today at the museum.

El Dorado Prairie Port Festival volunteers are gearing up for a fun-filled event July 24 through 27.
Many events remain but two new events have been added for the upcoming Festival.
Steve Reynolds is chairing the “Smoke on the Prairie” BBQ Contest for the evening of the 25th and all day on the 26th. The location will be on the east side of the Civic Center. This event will be sponsored by many businesses in El Dorado and surrounding areas. Prize money will be given and this is a sanctioned event with Kansas City Barbeque Society. Bingo will still be going on in the Civic Center on Saturday.

A trio of artists are sharing their figurative works, still lifes and landscapes with the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art for an exhibit which opens Friday.
Originally, museum co-director Terri Scott had tapped Skeet Sirmons to headline a show alone, but the artist decided he’d not likely have enough work to fill a gallery by himself. At Sirmons’ suggestion, the museum approached Mary Binford Miller and Nancy Whitaker to fill the gaps.

Butler Community College’s proposed Welcome Center could be in a tight position, possibly pushing back the original plans to have it open for fall 2009. With unexpected crunches cinching up the school’s budget, the center could be looking at a completion date in 2011.

After 31 years of sharing knowledge with youth, Brenda Addison, a fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary decided it was time to retire.
She has been teaching with the district for 27 years. Before coming to El Dorado, she taught in Hamilton for four years.

On Thursday, the El Dorado Tree Board planted a tree at Lincoln Elementary in celebration of Arbor Day.
