Over the last 28 years, El Dorado Middle School language arts teacher Margo Funk hopes she’s been able to impart this bit of wisdom to her students:
“Push yourself to go as far as you can; never just settle. In life, you don’t know what’s going to come your way or what opportunities are going to be available to you. If you’ve done your best to prepare yourself for that situation, then you’re better prepared to take advantage of those opportunities.”

The Butler Community College Board of Trustees met Tuesday evening to discuss approval of the Composite Engineering Technology Program.
“It’s about meeting the need for area employers,” Butler president, Jackie Vietti said, in response to the program’s many benefits.

Since Jennifer Jones was crowned Miss Butler County 2008 in October, she’s tallied up, the KU student has appeared before about 4 million people.
El Dorado Middle School sixth graders got the chance to join that group when Jones spoke to them Thursday morning about the importance of being a friend. She’s delivered her message to more than 30 elementary and high schools so far and EMS was the third time she’s spoken to a middle school crowd.

Butler Community College’s proposed Welcome Center could be in a tight position, possibly pushing back the original plans to have it open for fall 2009. With unexpected crunches cinching up the school’s budget, the center could be looking at a completion date in 2011.

After 31 years of sharing knowledge with youth, Brenda Addison, a fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary decided it was time to retire.
She has been teaching with the district for 27 years. Before coming to El Dorado, she taught in Hamilton for four years.

For about 15 members of the El Dorado High School class of 2008, Thursday offered a glimpse into the past.
On April 17, 2001, students in Patti Cost and Nancy Peterie’s fifth grade classes at Skelly Elementary sealed a box with trinkets, photos and memorabilia to be opened shortly before graduating from El Dorado High School.
Now, seven years later and with graduation less than a month away, those students took a trip down memory lane as they surveyed those items and reminisced about what they were like at 11 years old.

The use of technology – text messages, instant messaging, Myspace, and so on – opens up a whole new level of bullying, cyber bullying.

Melcher, who is an elementary physical education teacher, will be retiring at the end of this school year.

Butler Community College students will be hoofing it to the tony tunes of 60 years of Broadway hits this weekend. The dance department’s final show of the year, entitled “Steppin’ Out,” will feature numbers from “West Side Story,” “Rent,” “Fosse,” “Hair,” “Tarzan” and “Grease.”

Preparation work began on Monday, including turning off the utilities and removing some of the items to be saved, such as the tile Wildcat, which will be placed in the new building once it is completed.
