ON Stage: Students to perform Alice in Wonderland, Jr.

Zany characters like the Cheshire Cat, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Mad Hatter and March Hare will all be a part of “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.,” an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale.

The El Dorado Youth Commission presented their annual report to the El Dorado City Commission May 18.

Dough nuts, fruit and milk were among items on the menu for El Dorado High School’s senior breakfast Thursday morning.

A surprise visit

Fifth and sixth graders at Oil Hill Elementary School received a special surprise on their next to last day of school. The students had begun writing to a soldier stationed in Iraq several weeks ago. On Wednesday, the students’ teachers were called to the office for a package that had arrived. Since they couldn’t leave the students in their classrooms, they had them come with them and wait in the hall. To the students’ surprise, the soldier they had been corresponding with walked out of the office.

Stadium work outlined

With the architects chosen, more work is beginning to get underway with the proposed football stadium.

The architects, David Stewart and Vince Haines, with PKHLS, presented a proposed project outline at the Football Stadium Steering Committee meeting Tuesday.

1,024 students graduate at 81st commencement ceremonies

Butler Community College students closed another chapter in their lives Saturday during Butler's 81st Commencement Ceremonies.

"Graduates, you are at the very heart of what this is about," said Leann Ellis, vice president of academic affairs.

‘Never just settle’

Over the last 28 years, El Dorado Middle School language arts teacher Margo Funk hopes she’s been able to impart this bit of wisdom to her students: “Push yourself to go as far as you can; never just settle. In life, you don’t know what’s going to come your way or what opportunities are going to be available to you. If you’ve done your best to prepare yourself for that situation, then you’re better prepared to take advantage of those opportunities.”

Trustees discuss composite engineering program

The Butler Community College Board of Trustees met Tuesday evening to discuss approval of the Composite Engineering Technology Program.

“It’s about meeting the need for area employers,” Butler president, Jackie Vietti said, in response to the program’s many benefits.

A stop at EMS

Since Jennifer Jones was crowned Miss Butler County 2008 in October, she’s tallied up, the KU student has appeared before about 4 million people. El Dorado Middle School sixth graders got the chance to join that group when Jones spoke to them Thursday morning about the importance of being a friend. She’s delivered her message to more than 30 elementary and high schools so far and EMS was the third time she’s spoken to a middle school crowd.

Butler faces budget crunches

Butler Community College’s proposed Welcome Center could be in a tight position, possibly pushing back the original plans to have it open for fall 2009. With unexpected crunches cinching up the school’s budget, the center could be looking at a completion date in 2011.

Addison to retire from Lincoln after 27 years teaching

After 31 years of sharing knowledge with youth, Brenda Addison, a fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary decided it was time to retire.

She has been teaching with the district for 27 years. Before coming to El Dorado, she taught in Hamilton for four years.

Planting a tree in celebration of Arbor Day

On Thursday, the El Dorado Tree Board planted a tree at Lincoln Elementary   in celebration of Arbor Day.

Class of 2008 glimpses past

For about 15 members of the El Dorado High School class of 2008, Thursday offered a glimpse into the past. On April 17, 2001, students in Patti Cost and Nancy Peterie’s fifth grade classes at Skelly Elementary sealed a box with trinkets, photos and memorabilia to be opened shortly before graduating from El Dorado High School. Now, seven years later and with graduation less than a month away, those students took a trip down memory lane as they surveyed those items and reminisced about what they were like at 11 years old.

Cyber-bullying creates new choices

Shoving in the hall, calling names, being left out… these used to be the only types of bullying kids had to deal with. But as with everything, things continue to evolve. The use of technology – text messages, instant messaging, Myspace, and so on – opens up a whole new level of bullying, cyber bullying.

After 28 years, Debbie Melcher is “hanging up her P.E. whistle.”
Melcher, who is an elementary physical education teacher, will be retiring at the end of this school year.

Butler to present 60 years of Broadway

Butler Community College students will be hoofing it to the tony tunes of 60 years of Broadway hits this weekend. The dance department’s final show of the year, entitled “Steppin’ Out,” will feature numbers from “West Side Story,” “Rent,” “Fosse,” “Hair,” “Tarzan” and “Grease.”
