El Dorado, Kan. -

El Dorado Correctional Facility is increasing preventative security measures following the escape of two inmates last month, said Warden Ray Roberts at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Five rolls of additional razor wire -- each 30 inches in diameter -- are being installed along the perimeter fence, which stretches a mile and a half around the facility.

Roberts said segregation exercise yards like the ones that inmates Jesse Bell and Steven Ford had been contained in would be reinforced with heavy duty wire mesh material which he said is about twice as thick as the fencing that was used at the time of the escape.

The yards themselves are also being relocated to a spot that will allow them to be more visible to corrections officers on duty.

"We feel like with the additional razor wire and the enhanced segregation yards, that it will make it a lot more difficult for someone to penetrate that location," Roberts said.

The Kansas Department of Corrections is spending close to $250,000 to add the razor wire and another $200,000 was approved to upgrade the segregation yards, Roberts said.

Additionally, internal reviews and vulnerability tests are being conducted to determine any other weaknesses in the facility's fortitude.

“We continually review our security posture,” Roberts said. “Any changes that need to be made, we're making those as we speak.”
