The El Dorado City Commission expressed their gratitude to city employees for their efforts in the storm clean-up during their meeting May 18.
“I want to give a round of applause to the city workers for their hard work on the trees,” said Commissioner David Chapin. “I think they’ve done a fantastic job.”
Commissioners Nick Badwey and Shane Krause also echoed those sentiments.
“I thought they did a great job in all phases and they had to be worn out,” Badwey said.
Krause added that he had been copied on some of the thank you e-mails from the public and also thanked citizens for showing their appreciation.
He said he thought all of the commissioners should cook them hamburgers or something.
But plans were already in the works for something.
“The mayor also contacted me last week and thought it important the commission recognize all the help,” said Herb Llewellyn, city manager.
Llewellyn said he started talking to the department heads about it and didn’t think the commission room would be big enough to fit everyone who was involved in the efforts.
“I think it’s worthy,” he said. “no one said that’s not my job; everyone chipped in.”
He said he would leave it up to the commission to decide what they want to do.
Chapin said he thought serving hamburgers would be good.
“I would entertain operating a hamburger flipper,” he said.
Mayor Tom McKibban agreed with the idea.
They decided to set a lunch for the employees on June 1, with the Red Devil Chefs assisting, pending the availability of the Red Devils.
They also are inviting Butler County, the cities of Augusta and Andover and the Kansas Department of Transportation, all of who assisted in the cleanup.
In addition to the lunch, the city also is looking to pay some salaried employees for their overtime they worked in the disaster.
