Butler Community College students are enjoying a week of homecoming activities.

Over 30 students were nominated by Butler student organizations for Homecoming Royalty. After paper ballot voting in BOE and BOA on Monday, six finalists were selected for online final voting.

The queen finalists are Sonia Lynn Houser, Shannon Keys and Anna Schmidt Houser, from Wichita, is a freshman. She was nominated by Butler’s Student Government Association.  

Houser plans to major in math and engineering and attend WSU or Kansas State after Butler for her bachelor’s degree. Her long-term goals include completing master’s degrees in both math and engineering.  

She is a member Phi Theta Kappa, youth groups, Bible studies and is the secretary/treasurer for Butler’s Student Government Association. In her free time, she likes to watch Law and Order, spending time with her dog and family, travel to Florida, and partake in a variety of outdoor activities including rock-climbing, river-rafting and skiing. She is the daughter of Sandy Shipley and Jim Houser.
 

Keys is sponsored by Butler’s student newspaper, The Lantern. She is from Topeka and is a sophomore at Butler.

She plans to attend the University of Missouri, Kansas City and enter the teacher’s program there.  

Keys is a member of the newspaper staff at Butler and in her free time, she enjoys dancing, listening to music, spending time with family and friends, shopping and buying shoes. She is the daughter of Ethel Phillips.
 

Schmidt is sponsored by Butler’s Vocal Music department. She is from Wichita and is in her second year at Butler.

Schmidt plans to pursue a degree in elementary education at a four-year college after Butler, most likely at WSU.  

At Butler, she is a member of Headliners, tap dancing and the Noteables (Butler’s women’s barbershop quartet). She enjoys singing, playing the piano, working with children, going to Bible study and vacationing with family. She is the daughter of Ruth and Vince Schmidt.

King finalists were Adrian Campbell, Kipp Schuler and Brett J. Swafford

Campbell is a sophomore at Butler and is sponsored by Butler’s Football Team. He hails from Dallas.  

He has not yet declared a major, but after Butler Schmidt plans to play football at a four-year college and would like to one day own his own business. Currently, he is a red shirt football player. In his free time, he enjoys basketball, movies and hanging out with friends. He is the son of Jesse and Ruby Campbell.  

Schuler is from Haviland and is a sophomore. He was nominated by resident assistants/residence life and track/cross country.  

Schuler plans to attend the University of Idaho and pursue a degree in exercise science and minor in youth ministries. He also plans to run until his legs fall off and hopes to complete in an Iron Man Triathlon one day.

In addition to being a resident assistant and a member of the track/cross country teams, Schuler is a Student Mentor and president of the Campus Crusaders for Christ. He also enjoys running, hunting, fishing biking and pretty much anything outdoors. He also values being around and working with people. His favorite verse from the Bible is, Phillipians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” He is the son of Ken Schuler.

Swafford hails from Kiowa and is a sophomore. He was nominated by Butler’s Student Government Association.

He plans to attend WSU and pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration and possibly pursue a master’s degree in business administration.

Swafford is an executive member of SGA serving as the activities chair for Butler of Andover in SGA and is a member of Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO). In his free time, he likes to watch movies, play soccer, football, basketball and tennis. He also enjoys taking trips to Tablerock Lake with his family and being with friends. He is the son of Brett Swafford.

The students have been participating in homecoming events throughout the past week.

On Monday they attended a dinner, which included voting, games and prizes. Then Tuesday, they enjoyed a game of paintball at Frog Holler in Derby. On Wednesday, students enjoyed bowling at Prairie Bowl.

A toga dance is scheduled for this evening, followed by Butler Pride Day Friday.

The king and queen will be crowned at half-time of the football game Saturday against Hutchinson at Galen Blackmore Stadium.
