With temperatures already reaching triple digits, families in need will be able to cool off during the hot Kansas summer thanks to Westar Energy.

Westar donated fans to the Salvation Army the morning of June 24.

Shawn Boyer, Salvation Army, received a called early last week from a Westar representative asking if the fans would be a good idea.

“I said yes,” Boyer remarked. “It’s a wonderful idea; it was really needed.”

Westar employees took a company truck to pick up fans from Walmart and then delivered them to the Salvation Army.

Westar donated a total of 27 fans.

The fans are being distributed to people who need help keeping their homes cool this summer.

“There’s a high demand for fans,” said Boyer. “It’s going to be a very hot summer.”

As of Friday, six fans had already been given out.

“The response has been really good,” she added.

Westar employees enjoyed providing assistance to those in need.

“They were glad to be able to help,” Boyer said. “By providing the fans, they would be able to help some of their customers as well.”

“I’m very happy that Westar saw a need with this hot spell we’re going through,” said Salvation Army Captain Rick Hamelund.

The Salvation Army will be determining the eligibility for fans.
Requirements to receive a fan include a picture ID, proof of address and income and a social security card from everyone in their home.

“Anybody that needs a fan can come in,” said Boyer.

Interested individuals should call the Salvation Army at 321-4070.
