During the month of May, groups throughout the state are working to promote motorcycle awareness.

Mick Jimenez, with Butler County A.B.A.T.E., received a proclamation declaring “Motorcycle Awareness Month” from Mayor Tom McKibban during Monday’s El Dorado City Commission meeting.

“We put on motorcycle awareness and work with the state to do such,” Jimenez said.

According to the proclamation, many people are turning to motorcycles for commuting, business and pleasure travel as summer approaches and gas prices increase.

It continued to state that “motorcycles can be difficult for other drivers to see due to their smaller size, and car-motorcycle accidents usually have serious results for the motorcyclist.”

The proclamation encourages simple awareness reminders, which can help prevent motorcycle accidents.

“The state of Kansas, in the last couple of years, has been very supportive of us,” Jimenez said.

One opportunity for motorcycle awareness is an event May 9 at Alefs Harley-Davidson in Wichita.

“Anyone who wants to come, they can find out about the different organizations that are out there,” Jimenez said.

The event is free and open to the public.
