The Butler Community College Board of Trustees met July 8 to discuss the Andover USD 385 tobacco policy.
On July 1, the Andover school facilities put into action a new tobacco policy restricting the use of tobacco products.
This policy ensured that all facilities and grounds are tobacco free.
Administrators made all those attending the summer programs aware of the new policy.
Butler’s 6000 building is attached to the Andover High School obligating the college to abide by this new policy.
Signs have been placed in each classroom and public area bulletin throughout the Butler of Andover campus.
A memo informing faculty and staff was provided at the Andover campus.
The college has also ordered tobacco-free signs and plans to place them at main entrances and exits of the 6000 building.
Some signs will also be placed on patio areas which until now have been designated for smoking.
Also the school district will be placing outdoor signs where people driving onto the grounds can be aware that the campus is officially tobacco-free.
A few minor bumps are anticipated, but the college is taking measures to ensure that the transition is a smooth one.
“If you’re going to restrict smoking at one site, we need to consider all other sites,” said President Jackie Vietti.
Discussions will continue on the topic of smoking at the Andover campus and other Butler Community College sites.
