It was a good day for a bicycle ride as the participants in the Great Escape Bike Ride headed out Sunday morning.

This year’s event was much different than last year’s, which ended up being rained out.
“We had 50 pre-register and we’re expecting about 100,” said Jack Cauble, organizer. “If you hit a good day, you’re going to do fine.”

This was the fifth year for the race, but the first year for two families from Arkansas City to take part.

They learned about the ride from their local bike shop, said Mary Ann Brook.
They take part in other rides, and enjoy riding.

They also brought their foreign exchange student, Artem Agafonov, who is from Russia, to take part.

He started riding since coming to the United States and said he was enjoying it.
Riders had the option of completing a 25, 50 or 80-mile ride. Those going 50 to 80 miles were served lunch at the Leon Senior Center.

To help ease the pain and sore muscles, Butler Community College students were giving massages after riders returned.

The bike ride is a benefit for the Spiritual Life Center at the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

They still need to raise $182,000 to complete the $950,000 project. They are still accepting donations, which are tax deductible.

When completed, the center 11,500-square-foot center will seat 300 in the chapel area and include a multipurpose room, five classrooms, library, two chaplains’ offices and conference room. The purpose of the center is to reduce returns to prison and provide hope and meaning in the lives of inmates.
