Reading levels have been up at Skelly and staff and faculty have been experimenting with Storytown, a recent addition to the district’s reading program that includes differential instruction and skill and strategy focus.
Staff from Skelly presented Board of Education members with a demonstration of how vowel sounds are taught. Smile Hill and Voweltown are both offshoots of Storytown that include pronunciation of vowel combinations.Magnetized mouth symbols and vowel combinations are utilized and a hill and town are constructed with magnets.Phonemic awareness is a key skill children receive from the activities and memory aids are used to boost retention.
“The kids that have not been able to be successful,” said Johnson, “are pumped.
