Kansas Corps volunteers served the Butler County Historical Society and Kansas Oil Museum on June 26.

The college student volunteers cleaned, prepped, painted and stained some of the museum buildings and displays.

Many historical museums and sites have been strained financially in recent years, and in some cases, even shut down. The Kansas Arts Commission dollars have reduced by the Legislature by 53 percent since July 1, 2008 leaving many museums and art galleries with little financial support.

Christine Downey-Schmidt of the Kansas Board of Regents and Kansas Arts Commission shared her support of Kansas Corps and their volunteer service, “this is another great project.”

This service project is a makeup opportunity for the museum and Kansas Corps volunteers from January. Kansas Corps volunteers were arranged to serve the history center in January on Kansas Day, but were unable to do so because of the poor weather conditions.

Kansas Corps’ purpose is to unite student volunteers from Kansas colleges and universities to serve the public service needs in the state of Kansas. Participating student volunteers come from campuses all over the state to help with this project.

Lunch was provided for the volunteers by Commerce Bank of El Dorado.

Kansas Corps is currently in its inaugural year and has completed a number of successful service projects. With a single phone call, this group can be mobilized to provide disaster recovery, social services and/or community development assistance to any region of the state.

Kansas Corps welcomes the input of the community. If you have a community concern that Kansas Corps can help with, please contact Leah Noakes at Kansas corps@fhsu.edu or call 785-628-4668.
