Those participating in this year’s Relay For Life will be “going for the gold.”

The kick-off meeting for the Relay was held Monday evening, announcing an olympic theme.

“We’ll go for the gold in our fight against cancer,” said Debbie Dawson, Relay chair.

Monday evening team captains and others interested in the Relay had the opportunity to get information and sign up for the event, as well as volunteer for some of the open positions they have on their committees.

“We’re still looking for teams,” Dawson said. “This is just the kick-off.”

Their goal is to have 25 teams this year, although Dawson said they would love to have more than that.

They also have a goal of raising $65,000.

“The earlier they sign up, the longer they will have to fundraise,” Dawson said.

People can sign up at relayforlife.org/eldoradoks.

Some of the committee openings they have include the event Committee, an accounting chair and team coordinators.

One thing they will be doing this year is using social media more to try to get the word out more.

“We’re really wanting to get connected with our caregivers and survivors,” Dawson said.

The survivors and caregivers reception will be held on June 14, the Thursday before the Relay.

Dawson encourages people to register before the event online or by contacting her.
The Relay will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 15 and go until 6 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Galen Blackmore Stadium. One thing they will be doing for the Relay is collecting peoples’ “I Relay” stories and reading them throughout the event.
Dawson said everyone has a story of knowing a cancer survivor or patient or being one themselves and they want to share those stories.
Anyone who is a survivor and/or is interested in participating in the Relay can contact Dawson at 321-2260 or email her at debbie.dawson@carriageservices.com, or contact Pam Hendrix, survivor chair, at phendrix@butlercc.edu.
“Just come and join us,” Dawson said. “We have a lot of fun and it’s a really, really good cause and that is to put a stop to cancer.”
The first team captain meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Weideman Building at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
