Andover author and educator, Peter DeVries has filed as a candidate for the District 16 Senate Seat.
DeVries's concern for the quality of life – families and children – motivated him to seek office.
“I have listened to the people in our community, and the message is clear: voters feel ignored.
They are tired of electing leaders who forget about them once they are elected. I understand that frustration and will stand up for the people in my district first and foremost. The public is weary of politicians who cater to special interests and big money controls of our government. I am prepared and committed to provide leadership for beneficial change. I trust the people of the 16th Senate District to determine who will best represent their interests." said DeVries. "I will not sacrifice the local needs of the people I represent for the agenda of a national party or ANY special interest group!"
Taxation and budget is a key concern for DeVries. “Our tax code contains some serious problems. Property taxes are too high, and our middle class is shouldering a disproportional amount of the burden.”
In a similar vein, DeVries plans to put emphasis on laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth. DeVries states, “We have to understand the connections that exist within our educational system and social structures. Quality public schools prepare our youth for the collegiate experience. Our colleges, universities, and technical schools supply the training needed for the next generation’s work force. And, that labor force provides a necessary component for attracting quality employers to our district.”
DeVries believes that economic development policy needs better management and a more robust emphasis. "We can do better if we work together and make not only a more concerted effort but use good old fashioned common sense to bring in quality employers—attracting the types of businesses we would be proud to have our own children working for.” he said.
Peter DeVries is an accomplished author and the incoming Vice-President of the Andover Education Association. He earned his undergraduate degree at Sterling College, his graduate degree from Fort Hays State University, and has continued his education with Friends University and WSU. Peter teaches classes for Butler Community College and Andover Public Schools.
DeVries lives in Andover with his wife Crystal and their two daughters. Before making Andover their home, DeVries and his wife Crystal researched communities all over the country, searching for the best place to raise a family. They discovered Butler County. “We chose to make this our home because it offered the highest quality of life: great neighborhoods, a vibrant business community, beautiful recreation areas, and the best in education.
