After spending 10 years as curator of Butler Community College’s Erman B. White Gallery of Art, Valerie Haring decided to pass her job to colleague John Oehm.

However, Haring, who is the lead art instructor at Butler, started to miss working in the gallery. So she asked Oehm, who is in his second year as curator, if she could put together an exhibit.

He agreed, and Haring has assembled works that are now on display as part of the Alumni Exhibit.

“We had an alumni show 10 years ago,” said Haring.

She decided to have another alumni show now, and asked 14 former Butler students to contribute works of art for the exhibit.

“I tried to select artists that represented various media and different stages of their careers,” she said. “I wanted this show to be very educational for our current students.”

“This one is definitely my favorite,” art department student assistant Kelsey Camien said of the show. “I enjoy looking at them all.”

Haring hopes her current students will be inspired by the former students’ work and realize they too can have careers in the art industry.

“I feel a great sense of pride knowing I got to be a part of what these students have done,” said Haring. “I feel excited that I got to be along for the ride.”

The works of art on display are diverse and include photography, sculpture, fiber arts, graphic design, embroidery and painting.

The Butler alumni participating in the show include: Heather Bal, Jack Baumgartner, Kyle Bowen, Marshall Cox, Matthew Hilyard, Mika Holtzinger, Sarah Kephart, Justin McClure, Holly O’Ruth, Andres Rivas-Cruz, Eric Rose, Shawn Swope, Nora Tejada and Adam Tompkins.
