Those at the Coutts Museum of Art’s reception Friday learned a little more about Jessie Montes’s “cardboard” art during the reception.

Duane and Orvileta West, who represent Montes, talked about how they met the artist and his artwork.

“Jessie is really a wonderful fellow and he really is a genius,” Duane said.
Their relationship began in 1998 when they became his agents.

They had bought 25 pieces of his work at a show and then got to meet Montes.
“He has emphysema and can’t go out and pedal his work,” he said, “and we asked if he wanted us to represent him.”
This is the 45th show they have had for Montes so far.

“We just made up our mind we want as many people in the world to see this work,” Duane said. “I don’t think anyone else is doing this kind of art.”

His art is all created out of cardboard, which he cuts in little strips and glues in place. Some of the cardboard is colored to start with, while other he has to paint.

Duane said Montes began his career when his daughter was in the Gulf War. He began by making 8x10 photo frames, then filling them with pictures.

“It evolved to this wonderful artwork,” Duane said.
“The wonderful thing is he seldom ever makes more than one of a piece of artwork.”
There have only been a few portraits he made more than one of.

Montes has created more than 200 pieces of art.

“We have no idea how much longer he is going to be able to make his artwork,” Duane said.

In addition to representing Montes, the Wests continue to be collectors. They now have 37 pieces of his work. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 18. There also are two 30-minute films about Montes and his work that can be viewed at the museum.
