El Dorado, Kan. -

The Bradford Memorial Library celebrated the end of its summer reading program with a swim party Saturday.

The swim was held at 6:30 p.m. and continued into the evening, ending at 8:30.

Those who had received tickets for the party were allowed to bring members of their immediate family.

Three separate levels were included in the program.

Children of kindergarten age and under were in the "Pre-Readers" grouping.

The "Pre-Readers" were required to have at least 25 books read to them over the summer.

The second level of the program consisted of first through third graders.

This group, the "Early Readers" was required to read eight hours worth of books.

The third group, the "Readers," were required to read 12 hours worth of books in order to qualify for the party. This group consisted of readers in the fourth through fifth grade age range.

Also, there were 83 adults registered for the Adult Summer Reading.

For all the Summer Reading Programs offered, the library had a total attendance of 1,041 children and adults.

"The program seems to have gone very well," said Hollis Helmeci, library director. "We've been very busy."

Among features presented throughout the summer, the Mad Scientist presentation seemed to be a favorite.

"The Mad Scientist was lots of fun," said Helmeci. "And Dan, Dan the Magic Man was wonderful."

In addition to the pool party many other prizes and events were featured at the library over the summer.

"It was a fun summer, and we gave away many small prizes," said Helmeci.

Among other prizes the Movie Prize was won by Ashley Boyer, the Panini Grill prize was won by Myrtle Peden, the Paperback Afternoon Prize was won by Debra Keplar and the Grand Prize – a portable DVD player – was won by Ron Hayes.

"Everyone seemed to enjoy the activities we had, and we love to see the children reading," said Helmeci. "It is great to know that the ‘brain drain’ can be prevented, so that kids are ready for school in the fall."
