About 30 pool players gathered at the VFW Post 1174 for the first 9 Ball Pool Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The event was sponsored by the VFW Men’s Auxiliary.
“The most important thing we’re doing here is raising money for the VFW National Children’s Home,” said John Gish, Men’s Auxiliary president.
The Children’s Home is located in Eaton Rapids, Mich., and is made up of several homes named after the states. It provides a place to stay for orphans and children who have both parents deployed or one deployed and the remaining parent is having a hard time financially.
The home has cared for and helped children and families for more than 80 years. It also provides assistance for families with disabled veterans who are doing Voc Rehab.
The Home offers services to a child who has a parent, grandparents or great-grandparent who is a VFW or Ladies Auxiliary member who is a member in good standing or is deceased, or has a parent who is on active duty regardless of VFW membership or eligibility and who is unable to provide adequate care through the approved family-plan arrangement.
“Hopefully, we get enough we can make it bigger and better next year,” Gish said.
The Men’s Auxiliary also is hosting a membership drive. They need to have 50 members to be recognized by the national organization.
The Men’s Auxiliary is involved in a variety of things, including Flag Day, Memorial Day service and Celebration of Freedom. They also help the Women’s Auxiliary with projects when needed.
They meet at 6:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month.
The only requirement to join is to have an immediate family member who served in a foreign war.

“The people and their dedication to helping veterans, to me that is the most impressive thing about everyone who belongs down here,” Gish said.
