Dust off those running sneakers because El Dorado’s YMCA will be hosting the “Storm the Dam Trail” half marathon and 5K to benefit the Strong Kids Campaign.

The event will take place at the El Dorado State Park and the course will take runners through the scenic trails.

There will be six aid stations for competitors as well as bagel medals, food, entertainment and t-shirts.

“Everyone will receive a dry fit event shirt and we will have youth sizes available too,” said Ben Coffey, YMCA executive director.

Coffey wants to make the marathon more of a family event, promoting family and fitness.

“Hopefully it’s going to be a vintage trail run,” Coffey explained. “And we want to increase awareness of the Strong Kids Campaign.

“We’re taking it off the streets, for a unique event.”
The event’s purpose, in part, is to draw individuals from outside the community.

“We’ve got some awesome sponsors,” said Coffey.

Sponsors for the event include: Mizuno, Walmart, Pizza Hut, Cox Communications, TrueCare Pharmacy, Commerce Bank, Graphic Concepts, Inc., Coca-Cola, Frontier, Intrust, Connell and Connell, Joyce and Joyce, L.L.C., Spencer, Wernli, IES Raglin, Inc., The Consociate Group and El Dorado Internal Medicine.

Hibbit Sports, 2710 W. Central, will also be involved, making packets, shirts and race numbers available for participants and Best Wester is the official hotel sponsor.

Coffey is also looking for a DJ to provide addition entertainment.

“We are really pushing for youth and families to challenge themselves,” Coffey remarked.
“The course will capture the essence of the Flinthills.

“Most of the course is right on the lake and it will introduce outsiders to El Dorado and showcase our State Park.”

Coffey said everyone can sign up for the marathon at the YMCA or www.active.com.
“It will be a challenging but fun course,” he added.
