El Dorado, Kan. - A second new event is being added during this year’s Frontier Western Celebration in June.
A dutch oven cook-off will be held during the Heritage Activities, which will go on from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14.
“It’s going to consist of dutch ovens, which will be outside with coals,” said Emma Barnett, dutch oven committee chair. “We’re going to have a main dish and dessert or bread.”
The cooking will begin at 10 a.m. and contestants will have three hours from set-up to finish.
There will be three food judges and two field judges, one of which will be the mayor. The field judges will watch the preparation and set-up to make sure everything follows International Dutch Oven Society Rules.
“Everything has to be pretty much made there,” she said.
The other judges will be actual chefs.
Teams will be judged on cooking technique, team dress and spectator interaction, adherence to all contest rules, cleanliness and presentation and appearance and taste of entry.
First, second and third places will be awarded in both categories, and will be presented at 2 p.m.
“We wanted something to get the family involved and we thought this was a good way, and it goes with our western theme,” Barnett said.
They also will have a child safety camp cookbook too and some safety tips and simple things to prepare with children.
In addition, they are putting together a dutch oven cookbook, which they will have on pre-sale for $5. It will include main dishes, desserts, a kid’s page and information about dutch ovens and how to keep them up.
They are saving the front three pages of this book for the challengers in the competition who turn in recipes and their names. Everything has to be turned in by June 1.
Barnett said they are hoping to have at least 15 participants for their first year.
“We hope to grow every year,” she said, adding that they are always open to ideas on things they can do with it.
To help promote the event, Barnett will be at Sportsman Warehouse in Wichita from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday signing people up or people can go to http://eldoradomainstreet.org/festival.htm. The entry fee is $10 for singles or $20 for couples.
