OBITUARY - Jerry L. Hess

Jerry L. Hess, 75, of El Dorado, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 7:30 Monday evening at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado; recitation of the Rosary will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Mass following at 1:30. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.


Jerry was born on May 7, 1934 in Iola, Kan., the son of James and Genevieve (Ellis) Hess.  He graduated from Humboldt High School and came to El Dorado in 1957. He was a sheep and livestock rancher and worked at Texaco Refinery on the Coker Unit for 38 years before retiring. Jerry was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church; was active in leadership in 4-H; and was honored for his work with the Butler Community College Livestock Judging Team.  He loved to get together with family and friends.

In September 1956 he was married to Beverly Snodgrass. She preceded him in death in 1992. He later was married to Lila (Eddings) Seglem on March 19, 1993 at St. John’s Catholic Church in El Dorado.

Those who survive including his wife of the home are: a daughter, Christina Pyles and husband Bill of El Dorado; three step-children, Mary Shields and Kent of Dallas, Cathy Clark and Ken of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Jerry Seglem and Linda of Burns Flat, Okla.; one grandson, Charles William, Jr; eight step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; three brothers and their spouses, Phil and Margaret Hess of Butler, Mo., Bob and Susie Hess of Lawrence,  and Bernie and Pat Hess of Humboldt; and a sister, Mary Brigham if Leighton, Pa.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles; and sisters, Ann Ballinger and Julie Hess.

Memorials in his memory for the Butler 4-H or Butler Community College Livestock Judging Teams may be left with Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado, who is assisting the family with the arrangements. Condolences to the family can be sent to www.carlsoncolonial.com.
