Vernice E. Haines, 97, of El Dorado, died Monday evening, July 6, 2009 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Kirby-Morris funeral Home. Cremation preceded the services.
Vernice was born Sept. 16, 1911 on a farm near Rosalia, the daughter of Herbert Almer and Anna Pearl (Hanger) Haines. She lived all her life in Butler County. She attended school in Rosalia, graduated from El Dorado High School, El Dorado Junior College, Emporia College, and received her masters in education degree from Wichita State University. She taught first grade in the Lone Tree School, Cole Creek School, Rock Creek School, Vanora School and for 26 years at Oil Hill School. During WWII, she served her country by working at Boeing Airplane Company for more than three years.
Vernice was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Butler and Kansas State Retired Teachers Associations, a charter member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, the Butler County College Alumni Association where she was awarded Outstanding Alumnus in 1990 and the Republican Women. Her hobbies included traveling around the world, sewing, crocheting her flower garden, and attending Music theatre and Community Concert.
Surviving family include: one sister, A. Margaret Doornbos of El Dorado; four nephews, Gerald Haines, Richard Haines, Gary Doornbos and Dennis Doornbos; one niece, Teresa Bachman; and a number of great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by siblings Van Haines, Gladys Haines, Vivian Haines and Cletus H. Haines.
A memorial has been established with the Butler College Alumni Association.
