Dear Church Family and Community Friends,
We at First UMC are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless murder of Dr George Tiller last Sunday (May 31). As Christians we are all appalled when violence mars the sanctity of any place of worship.
While we acknowledge the complexity of the deep divisions over abortion, we categorically condemn this and other acts of illegal violence as a means of protest. This act was unconscionable and we ask the Christian community to unite with our Church in calling for prayer and peaceful response(s) to this crime. Let us resolve to resist further illegal or violent acts of backlash.
With us, we ask that you hold the Tiller family, their church (Reformation Lutheran) and all affected directly by this tragic event in your prayers and may we all seek God's guiding hand of justice and mercy.
