The final minute of regulation at the Power Plant made Butler Grizzlies fans nervous as the Dodge City Conquistadors grabbed offensive rebound after offensive rebound trying to get the equalizing three-point basket in the Jayhawk West contest.
The Conquistadors missed six attempts and the Grizzlies hit two free throws late on the way to a 60-55 victory that moved Butler into sole possession of second place in the league standings.
Butler (19-3, 7-2 Jayhawk West) clamped down on defense in the second half to take control of the game. The Conqs were 9-of-26 from the field after intermission in the loss.
“We had a little better attempt of defending people,” said Butler coach Mike Bargen. “In the first half, they got to run around and shoot what they wanted.
“It wasn’t our best effort defensively, but we found a way to win and that was the most important thing. We’re just going to regroup and try to get ready for Wednesday (at Garden City).”
The first half was a see-saw affair that saw 10 lead changes and seven ties through the first 20 minutes. Walker scored on an alley-oop slam just before the buzzer to push Butler ahead 34-32 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same as there were four more lead changes and six more ties before Butler took the lead for good with a five-point run with five minutes left in regulation.
Walker led the Grizzlies with a double-double (19 points and 13 rebounds), while Anthony Cousin added 11 points and had five assists in the win.
Bruce Massey led Dodge City (16-7, 4-5) in scoring with 15, while Tyler Barnes added 12 in the loss.
