When a comment is made of a team going through the motions, it’s usually not meant in a good light.
However, it is exactly meant as something good for the Wichita Collegiate Lady Spartans, who dominated the El Dorado Lady Wildcats in a Saturday night semifinal battle of the Lady Cat Classic at the EHS Alumni Court.
“We want to get in the mindset of doing the same things over and over again, no matter who we’re playing,” said Collegiate coach Terrence Phox. “When you do things consistently, no matter what the score is, you have a chance to be successful.”
The Lady Spartans scored the first nine points of the game and never took the foot off the gas on the way to their victory over the Lady Wildcats in a semifinal contest of the Lady Cat Classic.
“We just try to jump out on a team hard and jump out ahead,” said Collegiate junior Ashia Woods. “Repetition is what it is and that will help us through the season.”
Collegiate (10-1) maintained the nine-point lead after the first quarter and extended it to 33-8 by halftime. Woods scored 16 points in the first half and Sadie Clark seven in the first half. The Lady Spartans scored 15 points off of El Dorado turnovers and eight more off of second chances.
El Dorado didn't hit a field goal in the second quarter with their only points coming off three free throws by Lindsay Klein and one by Ashley Leckliter. The Lady Wildcats were 2-of-15 from the field and committed 16 turnovers in the first half.
El Dorado coach Kevin Wishart felt like the Lady Wildcats had the look of deer in the headlights after some disappointment to start the game.
“I was really fairly confident when we came out tonight that we were going to give them a game,” Wishart said. “The first three possessions were lay-ups and we missed all three of them.
“Then our confidence level went down and we started turning the ball over. We had a fast break designed to work, and when we did it, it did work; but we just lost confidence and it started the snowball running down the hill.”
Woods played sparingly in the second half and scored 23 points in the win. Collegiate played with mostly reserves late in the third quarter and the final stanza and the Lady Wildcats were able to close the gap in the closing period.
Brea Rice led El Dorado (4-8) in scoring with eight points.
Collegiate will play Gardner-Edgerton in the championship game of the Lady Cat Classic, while El Dorado will face rival Circle in the third place game. Times and dates haven't been set for the final round of the tournament.
