El Dorado junior Molly Milbourn continues to dominate the competition in her cross country meets, finishing the course in 14 minutes and 59 seconds to win her fifth meet of the season.
“I’m just trying to take each meet one at a time,” Milbourn said. “I just want to cut my time each meet, and we’ll see how it goes.”
Milbourn, the defending Class 4A state champion, said the conditions were good for running, which helped her stay focused and relaxed during the race.
“It was nice and cool. There was not much of a breeze," Milbourn said. "I was able to run a fast time. I ran a 14:59, which isn’t my PR (personal record), but is a PR for this course. I’m happy with my time. Last year, I ran about a 15:50, running behind (Belle Plaine's) Brianna Briggs by about 30 seconds.”
The Lady Wildcats finished seventh out of nine teams in the team standings with 123 points. Newton won the meet with 69 points, with Goddard finishing second with 76 and Wamego third with 81.
Hannah Helferich also had a personal record with a 16:43, good for 17th place in the individual standings for El Dorado. Other Lady Wildcat runners included Laura Haines was 32nd (17:35), Samantha Galley 36th (17:46), Sydney Saltsman 41st (18:07, personal record), Andrea Valadez 51st (19:22, personal record) and Tessa Heslop 54th (20:21).
The Wildcat boys finished fourth out of nine teams with 85 points. McPherson won with 51 points, followed by Wamego (53), Hutchinson (85) and El Dorado.
Casey Nightengale was the first runner to finish for the Wildcats in a time of 16:49 (good for sixth place), while Dale Nuckolls also had a top 10 finish (17:16, ninth).
Three Wildcats finished within three seconds of each other as Spencer Jensen (24th, 17:56), Michael Riedl (25th, 17:58) and Ben Jiles (26th, 17:59) completed the scoring for El Dorado. The other El Dorado runners were Dawson Brush (36th, 18:18) and Sam Haines (37th, 18:22).
The Wildcats will host their final regular season meet at 9:45 a.m. this Saturday at Bluestem Point next to El Dorado Lake.
