Missed chances can come back to haunt you as it did the El Dorado Broncos as the Haysville Heat scored four runs in the final two innings for a 6-3 Jayhawk League victory Tuesday night at McDonald Stadium.
El Dorado had runners thrown out at the plate to end two innings and closer Robbie Rea wasn't able to keep the Haysville offense from exploding late in the game to pull further ahead in the Jayhawk League lead midway through the season.
Rea gave up an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as the Heat tied the game, then gave up three straight hits — including a two-run home run by Gary Owens and Ben Kline followed with a home run of his own — to complete the comeback.
The Broncos (12-10, 6-10) had a chance to score in the first inning after Brian Fisher doubled, but got called out at home on a close play trying to score on a single by Kirk Walker.
Haysville (16-4, 13-3) got on the board in the top of the second on a RBI single by Kline; but the Broncos' Matt Giller answered it in the bottom of the fourth with a home run to tie the game.
El Dorado starting pitcher Charlie Lowell threw five innings and struck out 10 while giving up three hits, one walk and one run, but he would not figure in the decision.
The Heat took the lead in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Clint Stroud; but the Broncos answered in the bottom of the inning. El Dorado loaded the bases with one out in the frame and Rea came through with a two-run single.
All three El Dorado runs were charged to starting pitcher Tucker Stone. Stone gave up six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
A chance to add to that lead fell through in the seventh inning when Walker wasn't able to avoid the tag at home on a single by Giller, which ended El Dorado's threat. Haysville's Nate Shaver hit the sacrifice fly to tie the game in the top of the eighth and set the table for the final inning of the game.
The Broncos got two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth before having a double play end the chance for El Dorado to fight back one more time.
Giller finished 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI to lead the Broncos at the plate; while Tyler Smith was the only other player with more than one hit for El Dorado.
The Broncos play on the road tonight against the Topeka Giants before starting the five-game Parent's Weekend schedule with two seven-inning games on Thursday starting at 7 p.m.; followed by 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and close out with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
