El Dorado, Kan. -

Maybe all the El Dorado High School volleyball team needed was a little home cooking.

The Lady Cats found something on their home court Tuesday night and used it to sweep three matches over AVCTL Division IV opponents. El Dorado swept past Kingman (25-19, 25-16), Wellington (25-13, 25-20) and rival Circle (25-22, 12-25, 25-22) to move their record to 4-7 overall (1-3 in AVCTL Division III).

“We put some new things in this week, especially defensively,” said EHS head coach Jane Squires. “We shuffled our rotation a little bit, and it really seemed to help our blocking. The biggest change, though, was in our mental attitude. When we got down, we kept each other going and persevered. We knew we’d be okay.”

After fighting their way through Kingman in the opener, the first game against Wellington stayed close until Brittany Brown finished it with a nine-point run. Jessica Currier and Rachel West had big serving runs in the second game to hold off the Crusaders.

Against Circle, the ‘Cats won a close opening game before the Lady T-Birds seemed to find a groove, winning the second game easily. El Dorado led 17-11 in the third game, but Circle rallied to take a one-point lead. It stayed tight until Brown served out the last two points to give the Wildcats the win.

“The win over Circle was especially sweet on our home court,” Squires said. “We had moved Jessica Currier to the libero position, and she passed the ball very well during that match. We were determined not to lose that match.”

“Oh, we never beat Circle,” Brown added with a laugh. “We’re such close rivals, and we just really wanted to beat them. This is the first time we’ve beaten them since I started high school.”

Circle, meanwhile, defeated Wellington (25-15, 25-16) and Kingman (25-9, 25-18) to move their record to 2-2 in AVCTL IV and 5-3 overall.

“We served well overall, but we missed some key serves in the final game against El Dorado,” said Circle head coach Shelly Nibarger. “We also struggled with our serve receive, and that combination was the difference. It was nice to get our first league wins. We had our best blocking match of the season against Wellington.”

El Dorado plays a quad at Augusta next Tuesday at 5 p.m., in which they will play Augusta, Kingman and Mulvane. Circle will play at the Rossville Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.
