El Dorado, Kan. -

Joshua Dotson is receiving some additional help with college.

Dotson, a 2008 El Dorado High School graduate, received the Darrin Morrison Memorial Scholarship.

Dotson has been active in the community and school.

“I have been an active participate in Jr. Ambassadors for the past two years, which is a community service group that consists of high school students,” he said.

In school, he was awarded Cum Laude.
While much of his time lately has been taken up with baseball, he did work as a life guard at the Towanda City Pool for the summer between his sophomore and junior years.

“I also help around the house with daily chores,” he said. “I have helped around the community by helping in baseball clinics and practices for younger children.”

Dotson graduated in the top one-third of his class, with a 3.125 grade point average. He also received a variety of honors and awards during his high school career, including: All-League MVP his senior year; 1st Team All-League short stop his junior and senior years; 1st Team All-League third base his freshman year; 2nd Team All-League pitcher his senior year; honorable mention pitcher his sophomore and junior years; honorable mention third base his sophomore year; and student of month for December 2007. He had 10 career triples, 23 doubles and 145 total bases during high school. His batting average for a single season was .491, with his slugging percent at .895.

Dotson plans to attend Butler Community College, where he will study mechanical engineering.

This scholarship will help offset the cost of tuition and book fees at Butler.

The scholarship is named after Morrison, who played baseball at EHS, Butler Community College and Fort Hays State University. He was the Most Valuable Player for the 1990 El Dorado Class 5A state championship team, as well as a member of the Post 81 Class AA American Legion Champion team. He died in 1998 in Oklahoma. Since then, the scholarship has been awarded to a Butler County high school senior each year, with the first recipient in 1999.

Funds for the scholarship were raised during a golf tournament June 14 at Prairie Trails Golf and Country Club. Golfers played in A and B flights.

The team of Jeff Stewart, Scott Swan, Brandon Hoffmann and Trent Brown won the A flight. Second place went to Scott Ennis, Clare Dunn and Travis Overley.

First place in the B flight was won by the team of Ron Hoover, Sherri Hoover, Tim Lane and Cindy Lane. Second place went to Steve Stewart, Marcy Stewart, Dave Williams and Val Williams.
