Circle senior Christy Couey wanted to do what she could to make sure the Thunderbirds started the substate basketball tournament with a bang.
“It’s really important, because if we come out strong, it leads over to the second quarter and after halftime,” she said.
Couey scored six of her team’s first 11 points as Circle’s girls basketball team beat Augusta 62-32 Monday night in the first round of the Maize South substate bracket.
With the win, The Thurderbirds improve to 16-4 and will play Thursday at Maize South High School against Mulvane, which beat El Dorado 47-46 Monday.
After Circle’s quick 11-0 burst, Augusta closed to within seven at the end of the first quarter. But Circle’s defense caused 11 turnovers and held the Orioles to two points in the second quarter. After Shelby Brasfield grabbed a rebound off a missed shot by Circle, Charity Hon stole the outlet pass and hit a baseline jumper with three seconds before halftime.
The Thunderbirds led 37-15 and didn’t let the Orioles get much closer in the second half.
Coach Brian Henry said this kind of game is what the Thunderbirds will need to play going forward.
“I think we’re going to have to play complete games,” Henry said. “We’ve beaten everybody in our sub-state, so we know that we are capable of beating them, but we’ve also had some letdowns...We know what we can do, so we just got to continue to do it for four quarters.”
Junior Hanna Fleming led the Thunderbirds with 12 points. Haley Barrett scored 10 points on five baskets. Kyrstie Ehm made the team’s lone three-pointer and finished with 10 points.
Kyrsten Crawford scored a game-high 14 points for the Orioles (2-19).
