In the game of baseball when the opposing team gives you a number of chances to get runs on the board, the team at the plate should be able to have some success at getting runs across home plate.
Unfortunately for the El Dorado Broncos, they missed many of those chances Wednesday night on the way to losing to the Derby Twins 5-3 in the losers’ bracket final of the National Baseball Congress Midwest Regional, knocking the Broncos out of the tournament in third place.
The Broncos left 12 runners on base — eight in scoring position — and were 2-of-15 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
The seventh inning for the Broncos could sum up the entire night. El Dorado got the bases loaded and scored twice — Dorain Williams was hit by a pitch and Elliot Frey walked — before Derby closer Tyler Smith came in and struck out two batters and forced a third to ground out to end the scoring threat.
El Dorado (22-17) didn’t help themselves in the early going as the Twins scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off losing pitcher Aaron LaBrie. Brandon Gregorich recorded a RBI sacrifice fly and Cameron Watten followed that with a two-run double.
No more runs were scored until the Derby sixth with Cole Waddell scoring from second base on a throwing error by El Dorado shortstop Kirk Walker.
The Broncos scored their runs to cut their deficit in half, but Derby answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Gregorich.
El Dorado tried to rally in the ninth inning and got a run on a RBI double by Walker, but the Broncos left the tying run stranded at first base.
Alec Smith recorded the victory for the Twins (17-19), who will play the Haysville Heat today for the regional title. Smith threw six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Broncos get a couple of days off before returning to Jayhawk League action with a three-game series against the Liberal BeeJays this weekend. The first game of the series
