Wichita, Kan. - So far, so good. The Butler Community College softball team sent an emphatic message in their opening game of the Region VI Tournament at Wichita’s Two Rivers Youth Club Friday evening. The Grizzlies jumped on Colby early and often for a 12-0 win in five innings. Butler improved to 46-6 overall on the season. “We’ve stressed on keeping our focus this week,” said Butler head coach Doug Chance. “With the wind the way it was today, we also wanted to make sure we weren’t swinging for the fences too much.” The wind gusted up to 40 miles per hour at times, kicking up the occasional dust storm. Still, the Grizzlies seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Jessica Matlock’s two-run double in the first gave Butler the lead, and they quickly expanded it 7-0 with a five-run second. Amber Hilderman’s infield single scored Amber Freeman, and Tessa Earley scored on a wild pitch. Matlock walked to force in Hilderman, and Briana Nelson finished the rally with a two-run single. In the third, Hart slammed a two-run double and scored on a successful double steal. One out later, Andrea New doubled off the wall in left to score Hilderman, and New scored on a single by Nelson. Butler will face Garden City at 12:45. The championship game is scheduled for 4:15, with a second game (if necessary) at 6:00.
