El Dorado, Kan. - The El Dorado High School track teams opened the final stretch of the “Big Three” meets with a solid performance at the AVCTL Division III Meet at Galen Blackmore Stadium Friday evening. The Wildcat girls’ team won five events and finished second with 150 team points, placing behind league champion Buhler’s total of 212 points. Finishing behind the top two were Augusta (68), Mulvane (49), Andover (41) and Rose Hill (31). The El Dorado boys’ team finished fourth in the league with 87 points. The top five teams were tightly bunched, with Mulvane taking first (134), followed by Andover (118), Buhler (106), El Dorado, Augusta (83) and Rose Hill (27). On the girls’ side, coach Gary Melcher’s Wildcats were led by senior Laura Nightengale. Despite feeling slightly ill, Nightengale won the 800 (2:29.44) and the 1600 meters (5:19.4). Kay Riedl won the 400 (:59.75) while finishing second in the 100 (:12.99) and the 200 (:26.36). Justine Davenport won the 100-meter high hurdles (:15.50) while placing second in the long jump (17-0 1/4) and the triple jump (35-1 1/4). Freshman pole vaulter Jaimie House won her event with a league-meet record height of 11-2. Freshman Molly Milbourn placed second behind Nightengale in the 800 (2:30.30) and the 1600 (5:31.64). Paige Slayton was third in the 300-meter low hurdles (:49.77) and fourth in the javelin (92-10). House added a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles (:52.81). Markie Storrer was third in the long jump (14-7) and sixth in the 200 (:29.25). House was backed up in the pole vault by Ashley Leckliter (third, 10-2) and Kelcey Clites (fifth, 8-2). Kelly Nuckolls was sixth in the 3200 meters with a time of 14:21.99. El Dorado finished second in the 4x100 relay (:52.83) and the 4x400 relay (4:15.61) and third in the 4x800 relay (11:24.36). The Wildcat boys were led by senior Andrew Wagner, who won the 800 (2:03.09) and led a 1-3-4 finish in the event. Bailey Brush was third (2:04.99) while Dale Nuckolls placed fourth (2:07.05). Wagner added a third-place finish in the 1600 (4:32.01). El Dorado’s only other league champion was junior Randy Johnson in the javelin (167-0). Johnson also finished second in the 400 meters with a time of :52.58. Patrick Ward was fifth in the 100 (:11.30) while Jacob Meirowsky was sixth with a time of :11.45. Meirowsky was also fourth in the 200 (:23.33). Brandon Maus placed third in the discus (124-7) while Jason West finished fifth in the 400 (:55.29). Kutter Bookout was fourth in the high jump (5-5) while Dallas Funk placed fifth in the pole vault (12-1). El Dorado placed second in the 4x100 relay (:52.83) and the 4x800 relay (8:31.89) and finished third in the 4x400 relay (3:34.17). Next up for the Wildcats will be the Class 4A Regional Meet at Coffeyville next Friday. The field events will start at 3 p.m., the track preliminaries will begin at 5 p.m. and the track finals will start 30 minutes after the prelims are completed. The top four finishers in each event will advance to the State Track Meet May 23-24 at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium. This year’s 16-team Regional field includes El Dorado, Circle, Augusta, Mulvane, Andover, Andover Central, Rose Hill, Douglass, Wellington, Clearwater, Coffeyville, Labette County, Parsons, Columbus, Independence and Fredonia.
