El Dorado, Kan. - Five Kansas Jayhawks and two Kansas State Wildcats were selected during Thursday night’s National Basketball Association draft in New York City. Not surprisingly, Kansas State freshman sensation Michael Beasley was selected second overall by the Miami Heat. Beasley was a first-team All-American in his only season at K-State and led the Wildcats to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after the Wildcats had not been there for 10 years. The first member of the 2008 national-champion Kansas team to be selected was small forward Brandon Rush, who was taken with the 13th pick by the Portland Trail Blazers. Rush is part of a proposed trade, which could eventually send his rights to the Indiana Pacers. If the trade goes through, he could join his older brother Kareem, who played for the Pacers last season but is an unrestricted free agent this season. Kareem played his college ball at Missouri. Power forward Darell Arthur, whom many draft experts had projected as a lottery pick, lasted until the 27th pick, taken by the New Orleans Hornets. Arthur was reportedly part of two proposed trades. After selecting Arthur, the Hornets traded his rights to Portland, who in turn traded his rights to the Houston Rockets in a separate deal. Shooting guard Mario Chalmers, who hit the game-tying shot late in regulation against Memphis in KU’s overtime win in the national championship game, was taken early in the second round, selected with the 34th pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Forward Brandon Jackson was chosen by Heat with the 52nd pick, and senior center Sasha Kaun was selected by the Seattle Supersonics with the 56th pick. Kaun is also part of a proposed trade which would send him to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he would not be available to Cleveland right away because he just signed a three-year, multi-million-dollar contract with a professional team in his native Russia. The other Kansas State player taken was redshirt freshman small forward Bill Walker, who was taken with the 47th pick by the Washington Wizards. His rights were later traded to the World Champion Boston Celtics for cash considerations. Point guard Derrick Rose of Memphis was made the first overall selection by the Chicago Bulls, who won the draft lottery last month. After Miami chose Beasley, Minnesota selected USC freshman O.J. Mayo. Two UCLA players followed, as Russell Westbrook was drafted fourth by Seattle and freshman center Kevin Love was taken fifth by the Memphis Grizzlies. Italian star Danilo Gallinari was chosen with the sixth pick by the New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Clippers chose Indiana freshman Eric Gordon with the seventh choice. The Milwaukee Bucks chose West Virginia’s Joe Alexander eighth, the Charlotte Bobcats picked Texas point guard D.J. Augustin ninth and the New Jersey Nets selected 7-foot Stanford center Brook Lopez with the 10th pick. Brook’s twin brother, Robin, was chosen 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns.
