The El Dorado Lady Wildcats have been close in a number of games this season, but not been able to get the peverbial hump at the end as something didn’t come through.
Unfortunately, it happened again for the Lady Wildcats as they fell 47-46 to Mulvane in a Class 4A Maize South substate first round game at MHS Gymnasium.
“I feel badly for our kids,” said El Dorado coach Kevin Wishart. “They fought tooth and nail with them three times this year. We really thought we’d come in here and get a win, but it was just a few little things.”
Wishart said he was extrremely sad about the game for the three seniors — Brea Rice, Ashley Leckliter and Paige Slayton.
“Our program is so much better because of their contributions,” Wishart said. “They played their hearts out all year. They scratched and they fought.”
The Lady Wildcats had trouble shooting especially after the opening quarter, making only two field goals in each of the final three periods. El Dorado finished the game shooting 11-of-47 (23.4 percent) from the field.
They also had trouble at the free throw line, shooting less than 50 percent from the line before hitting eight of their last 10 in the final 1:26 of the game and finished with 20 of 34 from the line.
Rice led the Lady Wildcats (6-15) in scoring with 20 points — 10 in each half — while Lindsay Klein added 11.
Kayla Morton led Mulvane (10-11) with 15 points and Kelsey Miller added 11 (including the final five for the hosts).
The Lady Wildcats started off on fire by scoring the first 10 points of the game and led 13-2 after the opening quarter. Mulvane was only 1-of-5 from the field with seven turnovers.
El Dorado continued to play their game in the second quarter, leading by 14, before Mulvane scored seven straight points in the final 1:30 to close the gap to 21-15.
Mulvane hit its first four shots of the second half to push ahead in the game before the two squads traded points for the remainder of the third quarter with Sydney Locke hitting an off-balanced three-pointer just before the buzzer.
“It was one of those games where the ball would roll off the rim for us and they get a break by having a shooter bank in an off-balanced guard three-pointer,” Wishart said.
El Dorado was able to tie the game with 3:31 left in regulation on a three-pointer by Leckliter, but Mulvane regained the lead.
The teams again traded points with Klein hitting two free throws with 18.2 seconds left to tie the game at 45-45.
Miller hit a running lay-up with 10.2 seconds remaiing for Mulvane, before Rice had a chance to send the game into overtime with two free throws. Rice hit the first one, but the second rolled off the rim and Mulvane rebounded the ball to end the game.
Mulvane will face Circle in a semifinal game Thursday night at Maize South. The top-seeded Lady Thunderbirds beat Augusta 62-32 in another first round game.
