The El Dorado Broncos had another eighth inning rally Friday night against the Denver Cougars to record their second victory over the Colorado team during Parent’s Weekend at McDonald Stadium.
The Broncos were able to use their bunting abilities in scoring the winning run for a 2-1 victory over the Cougars.
The victory was the only contest the Broncos were able to play during Parent’s Weekend. A team from New Mexico that was supposed to play two games dropped out and a game Saturday night against the Gunnison Colts was cancelled because of rain. El Dorado finished the weekend as victors in two of three games.
Brian Fisher got on base with a single in the Broncos’ bottom of the eighth, and advanced to third when no one covered third base on a sacrifice bunt by Kirk Walker. Fisher scored on a squeeze bunt single by Matt Giller.
Reliever Tyler Blomberg picked up his second victory in the week against the Cougars. Blomberg, El Dorado’s third pitcher of the game, struck out two and didn’t allow a hit or a walk in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The Cougars (22-12) got their only run in the top of the first when Brandon Monahan walked, reached second on a wild pitch, and scored on a RBI single by Aarron Baumann. It was one of only two hits off of El Dorado starting pitcher Aaron LaBrie. LaBrie struck out five and walked two in six innings of work. Denver collected only three hits off of El Dorado pitching in both of their losses to the Broncos.
El Dorado (14-12) had runners on base due to doubles in the second through fifth innings, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until the fifth when Robbie Rea doubled and scored on a RBI single by Fisher.
The Broncos were scheduled to play Haysville on Monday at Vulcan Stadium for a Jayhawk League battle.
NOTE — The Broncos received their schedule for the NBC Midwest Regional tournament at Wichita’s Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The Broncos, the top seed due to winning last year’s tournament, will play their first game at 7 p.m. Saturday against either the Air Capital Astros or the Lindsborg Knights in a second round game.
