El Dorado, Kan. - The El Dorado High School baseball team couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the Class 4A Regional Tournament at McDonald Stadium Monday. The biggest challenge, though, is yet to come. The fourth-seeded Wildcats moved into Wednesday’s regional semifinals with a 14-4, six-inning win over #5 seed Mulvane in the first round Monday. El Dorado (14-7) had split a doubleheader at Mulvane to open their regular season. El Dorado starting pitcher Tyler Barnes got out of trouble in the top of the first inning, when Mulvane loaded the bases with none out. On a wild pitch, Mulvane’s Tyler Springer got a late jump from third base and was eventually tagged out in a rundown. After re-loading the bases with a walk, Barnes struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning. El Dorado got another early boost in the bottom of the first, thanks to a two-out solo home run by Josh Dotson. The ‘Cats assumed control of the game with a five-run third inning. Kris Morris was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Christian Locke, who took second on the throw home. Steven Shaver followed with a bunt single, and Dotson’s sacrifice fly scored Locke. After stealing two bases, Shaver scored on a single by Tyler Banion. One out later, Banion scored on an RBI triple by Baylor Parker, who later scored on a passed ball. The ‘Cats got two more runs in the fourth. Morris again led off by getting hit by a pitch, then advanced all the way to third on a wild pickoff throw. Morris scored on a sacrifice fly by Shaver. With two out, Dotson was hit by a pitch and came all the way around to score on another wild pickoff throw. El Dorado scored four in the fifth. Parker led off with a single, and Chris Smith singled one out later. Morris was hit by a pitch for the third straight time to load the bases, and Parker scored on a single by Locke. Shaver followed with an RBI single to score Smith, and Dotson was hit by a pitch for the second time to force in another run. Banion followed with an RBI single to score Locke. Mulvane scored a run in the sixth before El Dorado finished off the game with two in the bottom of the inning. Barnes singled and Smith was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Locke walked with one out to load the bases. With two out, Dotson walked to force in Barnes, and Smith scored the game’s final run when Banion was hit by a pitch. “Our defense was good, our hitting was good and our pitching was okay,” said EHS head coach Brad Long. “It wasn’t the prettiest game, but I was proud of how our kids played. Tyler Barnes did a great job getting out of that first inning, and Josh’s home run got us going offensively. Our hitters did a good job of making contact with two strikes and forcing their defense to make plays. Obviously, we’ll have a big challenge facing Andover Central next, but our guys our confident we can go out and win that game.” In other first-round games Monday, top seed Andover Central held off #8 seed Circle, 3-1; #7 seed Rose Hill fought off a seventh-inning rally to upset #2 seed Andover, 6-5; and #6 seed Augusta used a 17-run fourth inning to defeat #3 seed Douglass in four innings, 20-1. In the fourth inning alone, Augusta had 10 hits and benefited from six Douglass errors. El Dorado will face Andover Central in Wednesday’s first semifinal at 2 p.m. at McDonald Stadium. Augusta and Rose Hill will play at 4:30, with the regional championship game scheduled for 7 p.m.
