The Clay Center Lady Tigers scored the final five points of the second quarter to lead at intermission and never trailed in the second half on the way to a 61-50 victory over the Augusta Lady Orioles in a losers bracket game of the Lady Cat Classic.
It had been a restless group of Lady Tigers who stayed in their hotel rooms during Friday's postponement due to the snow that hit the area, plus the extra time to think about their last-second loss in the first round to host El Dorado.
The frustration showed as the Augusta players staying with Clay Center in the first half. The two teams traded the lead for most of the first half with Augusta twice overcoming five-point deficits. Clay Center (6-5) closed out the half with a three-pointer by Skylar Dunn and two free throws by Brooke Langvardt for a 28-23 lead.
"(Augusta) is a good team, but (getting the final five points of the half) helped the momentum," said Clay Center coach Mike Rothfuss. "We weren't getting our man-to-man defense down (in the first half), so at halftime, we had a little talk."
The Lady Orioles got as close as one midway through the third quarter before Clay Center started to pull away with its defense, scoring six of their last eight points off turnovers for a 42-33 lead.
Dunn led Clay Center in scoring with 20 points, while Sydney Crimmins added 16 and Langvardt 10 for the Lady Tigers.
Krysten Crawford led Augusta (1-10) with 16 points, while Natalie Rives added 12 (all on three-point baskets) and Christina Downs 10 for the Lady Orioles.
Augusta coach Brad Kohlman said the Augusta players had two of their best games in the tournament, despite both games being losses.
"I'm happy with the way our girls are playing now," Kohlman said. "I was worried at the beginning of the year with the inexperience. We're finally putting together how to playing the game like I want them to play. It's wonderful to see the progression, but we still need to see those wins."
Clay Center will face Winfield in the fifth place matchup, while Augusta plays Wichita East in the seventh place game. Dates and times will be announced by El Dorado High School and will publish in the Times as soon as it is received from USD 490.
