The El Dorado Wildcats had a week to dwell on their overtime loss to rival Circle as they prepared for their road contest against the Clearwater Indians.
Senior Spencer Jensen pretty much summed up the feelings of the entire team: “We need a win bad because we’re sick and tired of losing.”
The Wildcats took some medicine to get rid of their ailment Tuesday night with a 46-33 victory over the Indians in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League interdivision play.
El Dorado used its defensive pressure to hound Clearwater for most of the game. The Indians were 14-of-38 from the field and turned the ball over 17 times to El Dorado. The Wildcats scored 14 points off of those turnovers.
“What we were doing (on defense) was causing them problems,” said El Dorado coach Gary Melcher. “I thought we rebounded well and I felt that would be the key. We didn’t burn the nets, but it was good to lean on our defense.”
El Dorado (4-9) didn’t allow a field goal in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the game to push ahead 11-3 after the opening period.
Clearwater (4-9) scored 12 of the first 13 points of the second quarter to take a one-point lead, but the Indians didn’t score in the final three minutes and the Wildcats were able to regain a 17-15 lead by halftime.
The Wildcats broke the game open late in the third period, making their last four shots to extend a two-point lead to 31-21 by the end of the stanza. El Dorado led by as many as 15 points in the final quarter.
“We just needed to prepare ourselves,”said Jensen, who led the team with 11 points. Adam Just, Taylor Clites and Grant Hastin scored seven points apiece.
