Clearwater, Kan. - The El Dorado High School baseball team stumbled twice at Clearwater Monday, as the Wildcats were swept by the host Indians, 10-9 and 15-8. El Dorado slipped to 12-6 overall (7-1 in AVCTL Division III) as they prepared for their league-title showdown at home Tuesday with Andover High. The Wildcats appeared to be in good shape in the opening game. El Dorado jumped on the Indians for five runs in the top of the first inning. Christian Locke singled, Josh Dotson followed with an RBI double and Tyler Banion walked. Steven Shaver singled home a run with one out, and Baylor Parker reached safely on an error to score Banion and Shaver. Remington Rebstock singled home Parker for the fifth run of the frame. Clearwater would cut the lead to 5-4 before El Dorado scored twice in the fourth on a two-run home run by Dotson, who would hit another two-run homer in the sixth to make the score 9-4. Clearwater scored three times in the sixth on three walks and three hit batters to make it 9-7. In the bottom of the seventh, Clearwater scored three more runs to win the game, spurred on by three El Dorado errors. “We just melted down in that first game,” said EHS head coach Brad Long. “We had a five-run lead twice, and we couldn’t hold it. Our pitching and our defense let us down late in the game.” Dotson finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and five RBI. Locke was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The second game was much rougher for the Wildcats. The Indians jumped on starter Stuart Kelley for four runs each in the first two innings for an 8-1 lead. The Wildcats mounted a rally with a four-run third. Locke singled, Dotson doubled and Banion reached on an error to score both runners. Tyler Barnes also reached on an error before Shaver delivered a two-run single to make it 8-5. El Dorado scored twice more in the fifth on one hit and three Clearwater errors to cut the lead to 9-7, but the Indians pulled away again with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the inning. The Wildcats’ final run in the sixth came when Locke doubled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Rebstock. Locke, Shaver, Chris Smith and Kris Morris each had two hits in the nightcap for the Wildcats. Kelley and Mark McNown, El Dorado’s top two JV pitchers this season, shared the pitching duties in the second game. “We decided to rest our top pitchers for the Andover games,” Long admitted. “We can’t blame our losses completely on the pitching. We had eight errors in the doubleheader, and a few came at the worst possible moments. We’ll need to play better to beat Andover.” The Wildcats were scheduled to host Andover in a makeup doubleheader Tuesday at 4 p.m. at McDonald Stadium. Weather reports at press time said there was as much as a 70 percent chance of rain today, which could move the games back another day or two.
