El Dorado, Kan. - The El Dorado High School softball team held on to their season for one more day by winning their first-round game at the Class 4A Regional Tournament at East Park Monday. The sixth-seeded Lady Cats held off a late rally to defeat #3 seed Haven-Burrton, 2-1, to move into Tuesday’s semifinals. El Dorado started the sixth inning with back-to-back singles by Maddie Satterfield and Brea Rice, and Leeann Smith’s sacrifice moved the runners to second and third. After Jessica Currier popped out to third for the second out, Alyssa Ruff hit a grounder to the shortstop, and the throw to first skidded past the first baseman for an error, allowing Satterfield to score. Freshman Katelyn Utech followed with an infield single to score Rice. In the seventh, a pair of Wildcat errors led to a run scoring and Haven having runners at first and third with one out. Katie Byard got the next two batters on pop-ups to Satterfield at second base to finish the win. Byard allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings, walking two batters and hitting one while striking out five. “I think that was close to being my best game,” Byard said afterward. “I was a little nervous in that last inning, but my teammates helped pull me through. They kept giving me encouragement, and we were confident we were going to win.” “These girls have been in several games like this one this season,” said EHS head coach Jane Squires. “We had that 13-inning loss recently at Clearwater, and Clearwater’s got a very good team. Our girls have been growing in confidence over the course of the season. Our defense has gotten better, we’re hitting the ball pretty well and Katie has been pitching her heart out. She had some moments of nerves and frustration in that last inning, but you couldn’t tell by looking at her.”
