Runners and first and third and two outs in the top of the sixth inning and the El Dorado Broncos bring in infielder Jacob White to pinch hit during a second round game of the NBC Midwest Regional at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
So in a 1-1 contest with the Lindsborg Knights, White's only advice from Broncos' coach Andy Schatzley was to hit the ball on the ground. The Emporia State product follows through with a RBI single that starts an offensive explosion on the way to a 15-1 Broncos' victory to move to the winners' semifinals of the tournament.
"Coach (Schatzley) just told me to hit in on the ground," White said of his hit that started the avalance. "I got a pitch low and outside and was able to hit it up the middle and bring in the run."
The Broncos (21-15), who are on a 13-game winning streak at Lawrence-Dumont, had been baffled at the plate by Lindsborg starting pitcher Julian Esquibel for most of the game.
Although El Dorado had six hits, the only run they could get before the sixth was an one-out RBI double by Brian Fisher in the third inning. However, the Broncos stranded runners at second and third in that frame, and another in scoring position in the fourth.
But White's hit started a five-run inning for the Broncos — all with two outs and all off Esquibel. Robbie Rea and Elliot Frey hit RBI singles after White's hit; and both scored after a fielding error on a ball hit by Fisher.
"You have to give all the credit to their pitcher," Schatzley said. "We had trouble hitting him the first couple of times we went to the plate; but then we were finally able to figure him out."
The Broncos blew the game open with nine runs in the seventh aganist two Lindsborg pitchers. El Dorado had six hits in the inning and was also helped by four errors by the Knights.
Tyler Smith knocked in three runs with two singles and scored twice in the inning; Kirk Walker had two hits, scored twice and brought in a run; and Matt Giller scored twice. Sam Bates hit a RBI single, Fisher knocked in a run on a fielders choice, two more runs scored off Lindsborg errors on two grounders by White.
Smith finished 3-for-4 for the Broncos with two runs scored and his three RBIs in the seventh. Frey, Walker, Giller and Rea had two hits apiece in the win.
Starting pitcher Brian Flynn took the win from the mound despite a scary start. The Knights scored one run and had two more runners on base as the Wichita State lefthander threw 30 pitches in the bottom of the opening frame. Flynn finished with seven strikeouts and two walks and seven hits in six innings of work.
"Thirty pitches is not an ideal amount to throw in the first inning," Flynn said. "With the way the heat was on the field, it was more important to get quick outs on low pitches instead of trying to strike everybody out."
Cody Conners threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning to close out the game.
The Broncos' return to action tonight with against the Park City Rangers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.
